Barack Obama: The Freshman

3244_680

While I entirely missed Lisa Jack’s photography exhibition last August at the M+B Gallery in Los Angeles, I am grateful that the images are still up on the gallery’s website. Her recent exhibition titled “Barack Obama: The Freshman” presents a series of enchanting images of a young Barack in his twenties, poised and animated during a casual photoshoot at a small apartment in Los Angeles.

“Now a psychology professor and therapist, in 1980 Lisa jack was an aspiring photographer at Occidental College in Los Angeles and was in desperate need of a model. It was recommended that she take photographs of a young freshman, who later transferred to Columbia University in New York, by the name of Barry. He posed willingly, his legendary future as the first multiracial African-American President of the United States unbeknownst to all. After a brief afternoon photography session, these images remained hidden from the public for twenty-eight years, until Jack decided to search for them as a result of a dare. This exhibition made it possible for these images to be printed and displayed for the first time.”

American Ecstasy and so much more

Really, nothing could’ve prepared me for Barbara Nitke’s “Fine Arts” section. All I could possibly think was “why didn’t I find this sooner?”

American Ecstasy

13

There are 5 different sets: American Ecstasy, Resurrection, Kiss of Fire, Illuminata, and Polysexuals. Most are highly pornographic. If you have a weak stomach, don’t look, you really can’t un-see some of this stuff (this is more in reference to clicking on “rest of…”, I posted the tamer pictures).

These photos can range from great, to grotesque, to laughable, depending how you want to look at them. However they may be seen, on a more serious note, they are a great example of the multitude of sexual preferences, perversions to some, and our sense of taboo.

Pulp

Lawerence, Kansas based photographer/director Neil Krug is working on a new project titled “Pulp” which is “an upcoming photo book of psychedelic images made to look like old school paperback covers. The book features supermodel Joni Harbeck exclusively as the heroine in a world of fabricated dramas. Everything in the book has been photographed with expired polaroid film to put across the mood of looking at a beautifully beat to hell dusty LP cover.”
