L-Vis 1990

Maybe 2 or 3 years ago i was searching for Kid 606 tunes and ended up listening to the tracks posted on the Tiger Bass myspace page and came across the fresh and inventive sounds of L-Vis 1990. Shit blew my mind. Still blows my mind. I also fell in love with Curses who i later found out was a dude named Luca that i had met at a Brooklyn party called Trouble & Bass yada yada yada this isn’t a entry about Drop the Lime and bass and shit and party and fish and chips…


Apparently he’s over the “hyper bass” sound that he created. My most recent gathering of L-Vis’s music comes in form of that UK Funky shit titled “Murder.” Can’t remember if i bought it on Beatport or got it off some other blog but whatever, it’s tight dog. Also included is one of my favorites of his old shizzz titled “Stay Together,” and his flip on La Roux’s hit “In for the Kill.”

Nancy Silverton and Amy Pressman guest chef at Canele

Tomorrow from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., Nancy Silverton (of Mozza fame) and Amy Pressman, former owner of Old Town Bakery in Pasadena, will guest chef at Canele in Atwater Village. They’ll be serving up a menu of burgers as a sort of preview for fans and potential investors in the new burger restaurant, tentatively called Grass Burger, that the pair hope to open shortly in the Farmers Market on Fairfax. Pressman says that the contracts haven’t been signed yet, but she’s fairly sure that the deal will go through. Reps from the Farmers Market are expected to attend the event. Canele chef Corina Weibel will also be cooking.  The dinner at Canele is prix fixe and includes a Weiser Farms melon salad; a choice of a Sonoma grass-fed beef cheeseburger or a Sonoma grass-fed beef burger topped with a fried egg and frisee; and a fig-milk-chocolate-bourbon ice cream dessert. The cost is $36.

Morgan Geist – of Metro Area / Environ / Unclassics fame – dug deep into the recesses of what must be a record collection the size of a mountain to weave together this dustily beautified journey through abandoned early 80s NY. Geist’s selection of late 70s / early 80s electronic tracks exquisitely captures a moment in time when the prevailing disco sheen hanging hazily over the city was being overtaken by the throbbing pulse of murder, drugs, and dirt that ran a heavy current underneath. All in all it’s a mix that captures a certain brand of austere beauty. If that all sounds a little too ‘grown’, we’re almost 100% positive that Mr. Geist threw in some chopped and screwed Arthur Russell for the new jacks towards the very end.
